This qualification covers the use of brush-cutters or trimmers, covering pre-use checks and maintenance, identification of controls and instruments and operating the machine to cut or trim to the capacity of the machine. It is for anyone employed in the agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance industries who currently operates, or will be required to operate a brushcutter/trimmer.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and City & Guilds number (if held). To obtain your City & Guilds individual candidate number please call 02476 857300.

Candidates will need to either bring their own brushcutter (strimmer) fully fueled/charged or contact the office in advance to hireone. The following PPE is required: a safety helmet with mesh visor (or separate safety goggles), ear defenders, toughened work trousers or chainsaw trousers, gloves, protective footwear (with good grip and protective guarding at front vamp and instep, NOT wellington boots or trainers).

PPE is available to hire at our Wiltshire site at £12.50 + VAT per day, please let us know ahead of the course if you need to hire this.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start and bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses (if required).

This is a Level 2 qualification, which is independently assessed. The price of the course includes the cost of the assessment. However your assessment slot needs to be booked by our office team on a date following your course. We have assessors pre-booked to cover this course.

This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification in the land-based sector, Equivalent to a Level 2 academic qualification like GCSEs.

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element of this course, we will require a workshop type space with benches for the maintenance element together with a supply of suitable tools. In addition, for the practical, please ensure suitable outside space for strimming.

For PPE, candidates need their own brushcutter (strimmer) fully fuelled or charged, safety helmet with mesh visor (or separate safety goggles), ear defenders, toughened work trousers OR chainsaw trousers, gloves, high viz top, protective footwear (with good grip and protective guarding at front vamp and instep, NOT wellington boots or trainers).

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Produce a site-specific risk assessment for brushcutter/trimmer operations
  • Identify the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) required
  • Identify the health and safety features required on a brushcutter/trimmer
  • Identify defects on the equipment and decide which the operator can remedy, and which require a service engineer’s attention
  • Correctly carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the machine manufacturer’s instruction book
  • Prepare the equipment for use with the correct fuel/oil mix

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
  • >16 years old
