Undertaking the Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm will enable you to prove your competence and knowledge in Felling and Processing Trees and provide evidence of your ability to meet license to practice and/or other legal requirements. This is a 3 Day training course also includes the price of the half day Level 2 independent assessment. However the assessment time needs to be booked with one of our independent City & Guilds assessors. Please call the office to book your assessment slot.

Course information

You will need to make your own provision for lunch. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available all day.

Candidates must have previously completed their Level 2 Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross-Cutting course & assessment within the last 5 years. Or have the assessment booked with us.

Please forward your Level 2 Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross-Cutting Certificate.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and City & Guilds number (if held). To obtain your City & Guilds individual candidate number please call 02476 857300.

Candidates need to bring PPE and a chainsaw with a bar length of no longer than 15", please refer to the kit list for a full list of items. This is available to hire at our Wiltshire site at £25.00 + VAT per day (excluding the personal first aid bleed kit). Please let us know ahead of the course if you need to hire.

Please note it is mandatory to bring a personal first aid bleed kit, if candidates arrive without one they will be required to purchase a STEIN Personal Bleed Control Kit at a cost of £45 +VAT.

Please note candidates must have previously completed the Chainsaw Maintenance & Cross-Cutting course to attend this course.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start and bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses if required.

This is a Level 2 qualification, which is independently assessed. The price of the course includes the cost of the assessment. However your assessment slot needs to be booked by our office team on a date following your course. We have assessors pre-booked to cover this course.

This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification in the land-based sector, Equivalent to a Level 2 academic qualification like GCSEs.

The qualification is assessed through practical assessments that involve direct observation and questioning by an approved assessor.

Additional information

Please email the office with a site contact name, number and what3words reference. Please inform us of any site security requirements one week prior to your course.

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element, please ensure that there is a workspace with vices [at least one vice per two candidates], maintenance tools and a supply of fallen timber for the crosscutting. In relation to the felling practical, we will require at least X15 trees per candidate of varying diameter (50-380mm) with full vehicular access to the woodlands in case of an emergency.

Candidates will need to bring PPE and chainsaw with a bar length of no more than 15", please refer to the kit list for a full list of items. Candidates will also need to have a personal first aid bleed kit.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Identify the risk assessment and emergency procedures on a worksite
  • Organise site safety and state the procedures required
  • Assess the trees to be felled for hazards and risks
  • Fell trees which have a diameter less than the effective cutting length of a guide bar (guide bar length not greater than 380mm/15”)
  • Assess a leaning tree and the safest method of felling
  • Make accurate felling cuts in the correct positions
  • De-limb felled trees in a safe and methodical manner
  • Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths
  • Assess and explain the terms tension and compression
  • in timber
  • Adopt safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar
  • Handle and stack timber in a safe manner
  • Assess a hung-up tree and the safest method of takedown
  • Select and prepare equipment required for safe and effective takedown
  • Check on the safety of takedown tools
  • Make accurate severing cuts in the correct positions
  • Select and use hand tools safely
  • Take down hung-up trees to a safe and stable position
  • State techniques which must not be used for the takedown of hung-up trees.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
  • >16 years old
  • Hold a Level 2 assessment in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting and recieved training within the last 5 years.
