Course information

You will need to make your own provision for lunch. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available all day.

Greenway Training will provide the machinery.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start.

Candidates need to be dressed appropriately in work type clothing and safety footwear (not wellington boots or trainers) and bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses if required.

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please email the office with a site contact name, number and what3words reference. Please inform us of any site security requirements one week prior to your course.

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

Please ensure the details of the excavator which is fully fueled or charged [make and model] are confirmed ahead of course, with full operator manual to hand. The practical site area must be free of all services to excavate and trench up to 1.5m deep and 20m length.

For PPE, candidates will need high viz top and a hard safety helmet.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Describe the key requirements of health, safety and environmental legislation
  • Interpret and comply with drawings, specifications, schedules, risk assessments and manufacturer’s operator’s manuals (MOM) related to the plant or machinery operations and the work to be carried out
  • Identify the hazards associated with plant or machinery operations and put the appropriate control measures in place
  • Identify and explain the purpose of machine components and operator controls
  • Conduct all operational and pre-start checks
  • Prepare the excavator for site and highway travel Drive the excavator safely over varying types of terrain
  • Operate the excavator safely in restricted spaces
  • Prepare the machine and bucket to excavate
  • Demonstrate how to attach and remove different types of buckets and ancillaries safely
  • Select the appropriate techniques to perform essential tasks
  • Operate plant and machinery to excavate ground and loose materials to given work instructions
  • Perform excavation activities in a variety of soil types
  • Demonstrate how to place spoil into transporting vehicles safely
  • Demonstrate how to grade, spread and level different types of material
  • Demonstrate how to lift basic suspended loads with the excavator in set configuration(s)
  • Shut down and secure plant or machinery
  • Describe the procedures used for loading and unloading excavators when transported on a trailer.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
