Country Land & Business Star Letter
A Force for Farm Safety by Charlotte Boole MRICS, Greenway Training
Firstly, I congratulate the CLA South West team for hosting the insightful webinar: From Forces to Farming. Signposting agriculture as a career for service leavers was absent 10 years ago. Forces Farming, HighGround and RuralLink now offer conduits to career paths in our sector.
We know there are fantastic job opportunities and remunerative packages on farms run by forward looking managers, but as a sector and as induvial businesses, we are not active in promoting these to service leavers.
Ex-military personnel have many desirable attributes that businesses can benefit from, but I think their inherent safety awareness could be key to improving health and safety on our farms. These dynamic candidates will be automatically risk assessing each task and ensuring that ‘their team’ is safe. As an industry, we need to continue to improve health & safety and that means an improved outlook, not just another file in the office collated by an external consultant.
