This training and Level 2 qualification covers safe driving of a tractor, pre-use maintenance, safety checks and recognition of controls and instruments. The test of covers the use of the tractor in a range of situations: driving safely and correctly around a suitable course (including reversing with a trailer), trailer hitching, attaching 3-point linkage and Power Take Off (PTO) driven attachments. There is an optional unit that covers the use of a tractor fitted with a front-end loader.

Individuals who operate tractors and ancillary machinery as part of their work in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, landscaping or other industries. It will provide the individual with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare and operate a tractor and attachments safely and to industry standards in line with current legislation.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start.

Candidates should be dressed appropriately in work type clothing including toughened work trousers and safety footwear (not wellington boots or trainers) and bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses if required.

This is a Level 2 qualification, which is independently assessed. The price of the course includes the cost of the assessment. However your assessment slot needs to be booked by our office team on a date following your course. We have assessors pre-booked to cover this course.

This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification in the land-based sector, Equivalent to a Level 2 academic qualification like GCSEs.

The qualification is assessed through practical assessments that involve direct observation and questioning by an approved assessor.

 

Additional information

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element of this course, we will require a tractor with front loader [make and model confirmed ahead of course] which is fully fuelled, together with an arrangement of attachments, full operator manual to hand and current LOLER certificate.

In addition, we will require a covered area of the maintenance of the tractor and attachments for the practical including: Trailer for manoeuvring and reversing practice, this can be small or big; hard standing area for manoeuvring practice; possibly a field area that can be mown; if the candidates would like to cover fore-end loaders then 'material' will be needed to shovel up.

For PPE, candidates will need a high viz top and safety gloves.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Perform a risk assessment
  • Mount and dismount safely
  • Understand the purpose and meaning of the instrumentation
  • Understand the function of all controls
  • Understand the hazards associated with using controls
  • Understand the reasons for daily checks
  • Start and stop the engine in a safe manner
  • Be competent in driving a tractor in a forward and reverse direction
  • Leave the tractor in a safe state
  • Competently perform checking of the lubrication, cooling and air intake of the engine, perform basic lubrication of the tractor and ensure the tractor is in a safe road going state
  • Attach a mounted implement and manoeuvre in a forward and reverse direction
  • Attach a trailed implement and manoeuvre in a forward and reverse direction
  • Leave unattached implements in a safe state
  • Correctly attach a PTO shaft between tractor and implement
  • Attach the PTO shaft guards correctly
  • Assess the minimum turning circle of the machine and the angle of the PTO shaft.
  • Carry out basic operations using tractor mounted loader.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
