This course is for you if you need to become proficient as a Slinger/Signaller.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

Greenway Training will provide the machinery and equipment. For PPE, candidates will need high-visibility clothing, safety footwear appropriate to the activities and weather, overalls and wet-weather clothing, safety helmet and safety gloves.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start and be dressed appropriately.

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please ensure the details of the vehicle [make and model] are confirmed ahead of course.

The manufacturer's operator's manual for all machinery and attachments must be readily accessible. Test certificates must be available for all equipment and accessories.

  • A fully serviceable crane/lifting appliance with varying radii and slew facility compliant with all safety regulations and legislation
  • Lifting appliances may be one of the following, provided that they are equipped with certificated attachments: tower cranes; mobile cranes; telescopic handlers fitted with a purpose-made hook, excavators fitted with a lifting hook/eye, lorry loaders (machines must be suitable to allow the full range of British Standards signals to be demonstrated)
  • A range of suitable lifting accessories to include chain slings, wire-rope slings and fibre slings.
  • Suitable loads should be lifted, including bundled, balanced, unbalanced and 75% safe working load (SWL) of lifting accessories, such as tubes, pipes and palletised items
  • Safety nets for loads.

The practical site area needs to have a minimum 25m run to winch from and suitable material to winch, such as a large log.

Training and assessment must be completed on a suitable site off highway. The site must facilitate the lifting appliance operation throughout its full working radius.
Consideration to overhead and underground hazards together with ground conditions ensuring lifting appliance stability is not compromised. Training should be carried out on private land with the land owner’s permission, avoiding any public rights of way.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Describe the key requirements of health and safety legislation
  • Define the responsibilities of those involved in lifting operations
  • Interpret and apply the information within lifting plans
  • Explain the use and limitations of equipment and accessories
  • Describe how to care, maintain and store equipment and accessories
  • Locate and interpret information located on tags and labels
  • Inspect lifting equipment and accessories before and after use
  • Evaluate loads and select the most appropriate lifting equipment
  • Create a basic lift plan
  • Demonstrate how to attach and prepare a variety of loads for movement using the appropriate equipment and accessories
  • Employ clear methods of communication and signals to direct safe movement of the load
  • Demonstrate how to safely detach and store lifting equipment on completion of movement.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
