This course is for you if you need to prove your ability in safely preparing and operating winter service vehicles and equipment up to 3500kg or renew your Lantra Skills card.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

This course is only available on client's sites with suitable training facilities and machinery.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start and be dressed appropriately in work type clothing including; High-visibility clothing, toughened work trousers, safety gloves and safety footwear (appropriate to the activities and weather conditions). If required they should also bring - Safety hat, Eye protection, reading glasses, waterproof clothing and cold weather protection.

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element of this course, we will require a fully serviceable winter service vehicle (fixed body spreader or prime mover and spreader attachment) appropriate for the weight category being assessed and a snowplough and/or snow blower where required. The machine should be fully fueled [make and model confirmed ahead of course], with full operator manual to hand.

For the practical site, we will require an area that is off-highway on private land, avoiding any public rights of way. The land must have good drainage and be well clear of overhead power lines and structures. The area should be suitable for loading and discharging a variety of spreading materials. The assessment route for commercial vehicles must be a minimum of 20 miles and include both rural and urban sections. It should also include sections that require operative caution in winter conditions, i.e. steep gradients, roundabouts, major junctions and dual carriageways.

The following should also be available
The most recent inspection and maintenance record for the winter service vehicle, completed in accordance with Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), must be available for the instructor/operator to view
Clean rag, degreaser and brushes
Oil, grease, grease gun and oil can
Tyre pressure gauge and pump (if available).
Basic maintenance tools: Hose & water supply for cleaning equipment and a comprehensive tool kit.
Please provide the following:
A warm, dry, well-lit and under cover classroom, with adequate space for learners to undertake theory and practical work (where applicable). Adequate washing and toilet facilities. Access and exit points should be safe, well-lit and suitable for those attending. Any emergency exits should be clear and marked. Adequate first aid and fire safety equipment. Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Demonstrate how to safely discharge spreading materials and wash down equipment after use
  • Describe the safety measures taken when removing and storing demountable and towed spreaders after use

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
  • >17 years old
  • hold a current and valid Driving licence, applicable for the size of machine and have been profiled by Greenway Training
  • hold a current and valid Certificate for WSO01 Winter Service Operations - Health and Safety Awareness.
