Course information

You will need to make your own provision for lunch. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available all day.

Any person employed in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscaping and grounds maintenance who is or will be required to operate woodchippers. Inexperienced members may require longer than the stated guide times to fully utilise the information supplied. People involved in; arboriculture, forestry, utilities, estate management, woodland industries, local authorities, conservation, horticulture, land-based industries.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

Greenway Training Centre will provide the machinery required for this course. PPE is available to hire at our Wiltshire site at £12.50 + VAT per day, please let us know ahead of the course if you need to hire this.
• Climbing helmet incorporating face and hearing protection with a chin strap (within service date minimum 5 years) BS EN 397 / BS EN 14052 / BS EN 12492
• Hearing protection – EN 352
• Gloves – BS EN 381-7
• Non-snag clothing appropriate to prevailing weather
• Hi-visibility clothing – required when the risk assessment identifies a need (EN 471)
• Dust mask – applicable when certain types of materials are processed ( EN 149)
• Chainsaw boots* – BS EN ISO 17249
• Personal first aid kit

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start.

Candidates should bring their paperwork from the course, a waterproof coat and reading glasses (if required).

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please email the office with a site contact name, number and what3words reference. Please inform us of any site security requirements one week prior to your course.

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element of this course, we will require a woodchipper [make and model confirmed ahead of the course], together with the operators manual and maintenance tools. Please ensure suitable brash for chipping; the trainer will require sufficient for each candidate to chip.

For PPE, candidates need safety helmet with mesh visor (or separate safety goggles), ear defenders, high viz top, toughened work trousers OR chainsaw trousers, gloves, protective footwear (with good grip and protective guarding at front vamp and instep, NOT wellington boots or trainers) and a waterproof coat. Personal bleed kits are strongly recommended.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Produce a site-specific risk assessment for wood chipping operations
  • State the principles of Health and Safety Executive legislation and safety guidelines for using a woodchipper
  • Select the appropriate personal protective equipment and state the maintenance requirements
  • Carry out operator checks and identify the safety features of a woodchipper
  • Carry out routine operator maintenance
  • Inspect and identify defects on the blades
  • Prepare machine prior to operation, start the machine, carry out safety checks and stop machine
  • Prepare a work area and a range of materials for chipping and identify hazardous materials not to be chipped
  • Use approved techniques to chip woody brash and both short and long sections of timber safely and effectively
  • State the procedure for removing blockages
  • State the safety and environmental factors associated with the disposal of woodchips and the various end uses of woodchips
  • Prepare machine for transport and storage.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
