For high-risk chainsaw work (PUWER ACOP 137), operators must hold a certificate of competence or a nationally recognised qualification with independent assessment. Our Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting meets these requirements. It includes two days of LANTRA training plus a half-day independent assessment. Course information

You will need to make your own provision for lunch. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available all day.

This course is for people who are already working in, or are looking to work in one of the following industries: Arboriculture, Forestry, Agriculture, Horticulture, Woodland, Local Authorities, Conservation, Construction, Land-based.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

Candidates need to bring PPE and a chainsaw with a bar length of no longer than 15", please refer to the kit list for a full list of items.

This is available to hire at our Wiltshire site at £25.00 + VAT per day (excluding the personal first aid bleed kit). Please let us know ahead of the course if you need to hire. Please note it is mandatory to bring a personal first aid bleed kit, if candidates arrive without one they will be required to purchase a STEIN Personal Bleed Control Kit at a cost of £45 +VAT.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the course in preparation for a prompt start. Candidates should bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses (if required).

This is a Level 2 qualification, which is independently assessed. The price of the course includes the cost of the assessment. However your assessment slot needs to be booked by our office team on a date following your course. We have assessors pre-booked to cover this course.

This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification in the land-based sector, Equivalent to a Level 2 academic qualification like GCSEs.

The qualification is assessed through practical assessments that involve direct observation and questioning by an approved assessor.

Additional information

Please email the office with a site contact name, number and what3words reference. Please inform us of any site security requirements one week prior to your course.

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element, please ensure that there is a workspace of benches with vices [at least one vice per two candidates], maintenance tools and a good supply of fallen timber (between 3 to 9 inches in diameter) for the crosscutting.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Identify the necessary personal protective equipment required, report on its condition and locate the various standard marks
  • Identify required health and safety features on a chainsaw
  • Prepare the chainsaw for use with the correct fuel/oil mix and chain lubrication
  • Start the chainsaw from both cold and hot in a safe manner
  • Carry out pre-cutting safety tests - and state the procedures if the chainsaw fails these tests
  • State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
  • Organise site safety and state the procedures required
  • Identify faults and defects on a chainsaw and decide which you can sort yourself and which will need the help of a service engineer
  • Select and identify the correct tools to enable maintenance and report on their serviceability
  • Carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction book and/or the Lantra Awards workbook
  • Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths
  • Assess and explain the terms ‘tension’ and ‘compression’ in timber
  • Adopt safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar
  • Handle and stack timber in a safe manner.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
