Course information

You will need to make your own provision for lunch. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available all day.

This course is for anyone employed in the agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance industry that currently operates, or will be required to operate and/or maintain hand held hedge trimmers, trimmers for grass cutting, leaf blowers and vacuums.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

Candidates to bring their own multi tools, fully charged /fueled.

Candidates need to bring a safety helmet with mesh visor (or separate safety goggles), ear defenders, toughened work trousers or chainsaw trousers, gloves, protective footwear (with good grip and protective guarding at front vamp and instep, NOT wellington boots or trainers) and a waterproof coat.

PPE is available to hire at our Wiltshire site at £12.50 + VAT per day, please let us know ahead of the course if you need to hire PPE.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start and bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses (if required).

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please email the office with a site contact name, number and what3words reference. Please inform us of any site security requirements one week prior to your course.

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

Please ensure that there is a workshop type space with benches for the maintenance element together with a supply of suitable tools. In addition, for the practical, please ensure suitable timber lengths for cutting; the trainer will require a minimum of X4 lengths per candidate place.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Produce a site-specific risk assessment for landscape tool operations
  • Understand current legislation, regulations and industry guidance
  • Identify the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) required
  • Identify the health and safety features required on your landscape tool
  • Identify defects on a landscape tool and cutting equipment and decide which the operator can remedy, and which require a service engineer's attention
  • Correctly carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the machine manufacturer's operator's manual (MOM) and/or this course
  • Prepare the landscape tool for use with the correct fuel/oil mix
  • Start the landscape tool from both hot and cold starts in a safe manner
  • Carry out pre-start checks
  • State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks
  • Maintain the landscape tool and relevant cutting heads in a safe and efficient working condition
  • Adjust the landscape tool for safe and comfortable operation
  • Select the correct cutting head for the relevant operating conditions
  • Operate the landscape tool in a safe manner having regard for the safety of the public, the property and environmental factors
  • Install, remove, transport and store a battery
  • Safely dispose of the battery, battery charger and machine
  • Carry out maintenance of battery equipment
  • Clear the site correctly and professionally
  • Carry out the relevant checks on the machine after use
  • Store and transport the landscape tool safely and correctly.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
