This course is for those who need to become proficient in safely operating a counterbalance lift truck.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

Greenway Training will provide the equipment.

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start.

Candidates need to be dressed appropriately in worktype clothing and safety footwear (not wellington boots or trainers) and bring a waterproof coat and reading glasses (if required).

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element of this course, we will require a counterbalance forklift which is fully fuelled or charged [make and model confirmed ahead of course], with full operator manual to hand and current LOLER certificate.

For the practical site, we will require: a range of palleted loads and a trailer bed or similar on which to load them. Cones, barrels or similar in order to set up a double chicane 4-5m wide with a straight of at least 10m, Ability to lift a load of 75% of loaders capacity (ideally) to 75% of loaders lift height. Bales etc are fine if in good condition or we could place a pallet etc on a tower of bales. Potato boxes & IBCs are ideal but often unavailable.

For PPE, candidates will need a high viz top and safety gloves.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Prepare the lift truck for driving or manoeuvring by:
  • Having site safety awareness
  • Identifying basic construction and components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges
  • Identifying and complying with the manufacturer’s operator’s manual (MOM) and other information sources, such as rating plates and applicable regulations
  • Carrying out all pre-use and running checks
  • Configuring the lift truck for travel
  • Placing the lift truck in an out-of-service condition.
  • Operate, move or manoeuvre the lift trucks:
  • Both with and without a load
  • In confined areas using forward and reverse direction, with and without a load.
  • Select, transfer and position loads using a lift truck by:
  • Setting up the lift truck in order to lift various loads
  • Lifting various loads within the full working range of the lift truck
  • Ensuring load integrity and security
  • Transporting loads
  • Placing and retrieving loads accurately at various places
  • Placing and retrieving loads from a vehicle bed or trailer
  • Keeping within safe working parameters
  • Operating with bulk loads
  • Explaining the loading and unloading procedure, on and off a transporter.
  • Load and unload a container, vehicle, vessel or craft using a reach lift truck
  • Place and retrieve loads from a vehicle bed or trailer
  • Undertake post-operational checks on a lift truck.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
