This course is for you if you need to become proficient in safely operating an abrasive wheel machine.

Please bring photographic proof of ID and Lantra ID number (if held).

100% cotton or cotton-rich coveralls, with legs and arms covered for cutting and/or grinding with indoor equipment. Safety footwear

Candidates should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled course in preparation for a prompt start.

Candidates need to be dressed appropriately in worktype clothing, a pair of work overalls and safety footwear (not wellington boots or trainers) and bring reading glasses if required.

This is an Integrated Training and Assessment (ITA) course, meaning the training and final assessment are combined into a single course. The instructor provides instruction and practice, and then assesses the learner's skills during the course itself, so there is no separate, independent assessment to gain the qualification.

On successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded an electronic certificate. These are sent to your booking co-ordinator within 10 working days. Candidates can access all their certificates on LANTRA's Learner Hub. https://www.lantra.co.uk/learner-hub

Please ensure there is a dry and warm classroom type space with wifi connection and full access to w.c. facilities.

For the practical element of this course, we will require an indoor workshop type space with workbenches and vices, minimum of one vice per two candidates together with bench mounted grinder, handheld disc cutter, bench mounted cut off saw, handheld engine driven disc cutter.

Once complete, learners will be able to;

  • Identify the health and safety requirements for abrasive wheel operation
  • Carry out a risk assessment and implement control measures, including emergency procedures
  • Understand the legislative requirements and responsibilities of abrasive wheel operations
  • Understand the characteristics of abrasives and their uses
  • Understand and interpret the marking system of abrasive wheels
  • Understand how to handle and store abrasive wheels
  • Understand how to select and check abrasive wheels before use
  • Understand and identify what speeds should be adhered to in wheel selection
  • Identify the main components and understand their functions
  • Mount an abrasive wheel and /or a diamond wheel
  • Understand the difference between truing and dressing a wheel (bench grinders)
  • Dress a wheel and identify dressers (bench grinders)
  • Adjust work rests correctly (bench grinders)
  • Use operating precautions and be aware of avoiding hazardous conditions
  • Carry out daily maintenance on petrol powered machines (disc cutter and cut-off saws)
  • Operate the equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.

Pre requisites for this course

  • The ability to read and comprehend English.
  • Due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
